Possessing modern research skills and establishing a history of scientific achievement is fundamental to a successful application to STEM Master’s and PhD programs. Yet too often, cutting-edge research techniques, experiences, and career preparation are out of reach for STEM students in resource limited environments. To supplement their research experiences in their home institutions, STEM for Development helps to prepare students for graduate school and research careers through research internships, research skill webinars, and research career webinars that span the full range of STEM fields.
Remote Research Internships (RRI)
- In order to provide research opportunities to our students wherever they are, STEM for Development has established the Remote Research Internships (RRI) program. Under the RRI program, students will work remotely from their home country to contribute to the research of an SFD-affiliated laboratory from around the world. The inaugural SFD RRI will be held in cooperation with the Center for Intelligent Spatial Computing in the Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science at George Mason University from June – August 2023.
Research Career Webinars
- Our research career webinars bring researchers from across the full range of STEM disciplines to discuss their career trajectories and advice for young scientists interested in a similar path. We invite speakers from academic, government, corporate, and non-profit sectors.
Research Skill Webinars
- Our research skill webinars bring researchers from across the full range of STEM disciplines to provide introductory lectures on key research skillsets. Topics of past webinars have included using bibliometric and genetic databases, accessing and reading journal articles, and introductions to various programming languages for data analysis.
Coming Soon: Semester-Length Courses
- Be on the look-out! Over the next several months, STEM for Development intends to deploy semester-length courses focused on key reach skills for scientists, including introductions to critically evaluating journal articles, statistics, and programming in R among many other topics!
